With two practices in several members of the North team have began separating themselves from the rest of the roster. I will get into three standouts and also bring up some honorable mentions. We'll discuss several players through Friday leading up to the game on Saturday.
Every player on the North team is likely to end up on at least an 80-man roster this spring, but the trick has always been finding the men who will be day one starters.
The Denver Broncos have several needs and we've been discussing what can happen via free agency, the Senior Bowl offers the best opportunity to see what the nation's best Seniors can do against one another. Needs for the Broncos are predominantly on defense, though there is much depth to be added offensively as well.

Moore appears to be the 'most like' Tebow, but through two days of practice has yet to raise many eyebrows. Wilson was mentioned prior to practice starting as the best of the three, but Cousins has been the most impressive through Tuesday.
The three players that I want to focus on are all defensive: linebacker Lavonte David from Nebraska, corner back Jamell Fleming from Oklahoma and Boise State's safety/cornerback George Iloka.
Lavonte David:
I am not the only David fan in Denver and any Ohio State fan will tell you exactly who this guy is. David is an outside linebacker who can play inside (the biggest need this offseason in my opinion for the Broncos), he can also do time at strong safety. He officially weighed in as 6'0 1/2" 225 lbs. at the Senior Bowl. He was a 2010 All American Junior College transfer and is currently ranked fourth of all linebackers in the draft.
Get this in 2009 David's Fort Scott Junior College was playing Cam Newton's Blinn Junior College in the final, David spied Newton the entire game and finished the game with 18 tackles on Newton. David's man knock is his size.
Jamell Fleming:
If middle linebacker is my top priority this offseason cornerback is in my opinion the second biggest need. Undrafted rookie cornerback Chris Harris came out of nowhere in 2011 and looked like a very good fit at nickle back, Syd'quan Thompson sat the entire season on injured reserve and Cassius Vaughn sat a significant amount of time in IR as well. Andre Goodman to me is better than most give him credit for, but Denver needs a true second corner to balance out what the Broncos have been feeling since the incredible loss of Darrent Williams. Fleming may be a step in the right direction.
Fleming runs a 4.43 40-yard dash, he's not necessarily the ball hawk one would want, but that may be due to the fact that no one was dumb enough to throw to his side. He can lock down an entire side of the field and that means more sack opportunities for the defensive line. It also means that the Broncos defense would be less likely to repeat the embarrassment of their AFC Divisional round blunder. Fleming measured 5'10 5/8" 202 lbs. at the Senior Bowl.
George Iloka:
The Broncos made two draft investments at free safety last season in Rahim Moore and Quinton Carter, Carter had a very strong second half of the season. There is little debate about the fact that strong safety Brian Dawkins is about ready to retire. Denver needs depth and a replacement for Dawkins; David Bruton and Rafael Bush did decently filling in for Dawkins and I am not saying one of them couldn't emerge as the replacement, but they need competition. Iloka could be that for them.
Iloka is a free safety who can play corner, Mike Mayock even went as far as to say that he could be asked to play weak side linebacker. To me that screams strong safety given his 6'3 5/8" 222 lbs. frame, he's a four-year starter, was a second-team Sporting News All Freshman and runs a 4.42 40. He's currently ranked second of all free safeties.
Honorable Mentions:
Missouri tight end Michael Egnew, Cal wide receiver Marvin Johnson and as I mentioned earlier Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins.
We will have a South team wrap up posted tomorrow and in the meantime feel free to share your observations in right here. We'll have full coverage leading up to the Senior Bowl on Saturday.

I hate it when people just assume Brady Quinn is out of here.
Digger24 - January 24, 2012
Could Quinn run the team at a high level if Tebow went down?
Kellen Moore would be a nice upgrade in the 4th or 5th round
ElwayFanJ - January 24, 2012
I'm not going to fight about QBs.
I’ll state my case and leave it at that.
I think Weber will stick around as 3rd string. I think Quinn has been in our system 2 years now. He has been a good priced backup who at one time started in the NFL. If he wants to stay without demanding a high contract and the coaches feel he is an adequate backup I say we are good to go there. Now half of you are going to say he will want to go start somewhere and the other half will say he sucks and we don’t want him, I say I’ll wait to hear what the coaches think. Am I a Brady Quinn fan? No, I’m a Bronco fan who has no idea how Brady Quinn has been progressing in our system. I do know I don’t want Moore to take the place of a pick at another position so I want Quinn or a FA.
Digger24 - January 24, 2012
I agree with you on going after a backup in FA over the draft
Dennis Dixon would be my choice
ElwayFanJ - January 24, 2012
You are not the only one.
If Quinn wants to stay at a good price, let’s not waste draft picks. There is a good chance since most teams believe they have a no 1 QB and those who do not will enjoy a deep QB draft.

I have nothing against Moore.
I could see us getting a guy like Chandler Harnish after the draft and put him on PS.
Digger24 - January 25, 2012
I'll be ok with that.

David sounds too much like Wesley Woodyard
I like Woodyard, but he is just a little too small to be an everydown LB and not fluid enough to be a SS. David sounds like a similar player (IMO).
Broncoman - January 24, 2012
David is better in coverage and a better blitzer. He also steps up and makes big plays at the right time.
SteveUK - January 25, 2012
Obviously, my name tells you I love David..
I like Woodyard a lot, so don’t get me wrong. But, David is much more like Ian Gold than Woodyard. You’re going to get a guy who will never, ever be intimidated. A guy who becomes a foot taller and 50 lbs heavier when a big play is needed. A guy who will get your team the turnover it needs. A guy who leaves it all on the field.
David will make the team who drafts him look like absolute geniuses.
Husker4Rockies - January 25, 2012
ummmmmm Husker
“A guy who will get your team the turnover it needs.”
Wasn’t it Woodyard that striped the ball at the end of the Chicago game?

Marvin Jones, not Johnson
He’s a very solid possession receiver with pretty decent speed. I don’t know how high a priority the WR position is for Denver in the draft but he’d definitely be an upgrade from Royal and Willis.
Broncologist - January 24, 2012
What's the other cat's name from NC? Dwight Jones?
I sure didn’t see much out of Jeff Fuller today like some were talking about…
bfree2bronc - January 24, 2012
Fuller has looked sloppy
I’ve thought he’s a 4th round sleeper. If he drops to the 5th, that’s even better.
yibberat - January 24, 2012
I'm with Broncoman
Actually I was going to say this when I saw his comment. I think Woody could have had more playing time this year, love that man, definition of sure tackler and man can cover.
AndreMC - January 24, 2012
WW is learning his role and progressing quite nicely...
bfree2bronc - January 24, 2012
Did anybody notice CB Dwight (Bill) Bentley today at practice? 5'10 in high heels and 174lbs shut down corner...
George Iloka…I’ve watch nearly every BoiseSt game and George plays everywhere. I’ve seen him cover deep, up on the line at the edge against the wideout, at weakside linebacker making plays. I think he would be an upgrade over Bruton day one…
LBer LaVonte David is interesting as light as he is. He’s definitely phyical.
bfree2bronc - January 24, 2012
Bentley has some nice ball skills
Boykin impressed me too. Chris Rainey impressed me alot too, speed kills
Scotty Payne - January 24, 2012
If we look at QBs I hope we look at B.J. Coleman in rd 5. I think he has the best upside of the late round QBs and has the size already.
I like the safety prospect from Boise and wouldn’t mind taking him. When can he be had?
I would rather take Zach Brown than Lavonte David since Brown may also be able to transition to MLB similar to what Jon Beason did in Carolina. David seem only fit to play WLB and we already have a great WLB.
BroncoMath101 - January 25, 2012
1 great and 1 good WLB if we re-sign Woodyard.
Brown is quite a bit faster than David too. We have talked with both of them so……
Digger24 - January 25, 2012
I wonder about Bobby Wagner out of Utah State on day 3. Could he make the transition to MLB as well? He seems pretty athletic.
BroncoMath101 - January 25, 2012
What?
Moore is NOTHING like Tebow. I mean, he’s left handed, but that’s it. Moore is a Peyton Manning or Drew Brees type, carving up defenses with precision passing behind a stout offensive line. If Moore is forced to run, that play isn’t going to end up well. If Denver is going to commit to an offense centered around Tebow then Moore ain’t the guy they want. I love Kellen and I hope he succeeds in the NFL but Denver isn’t the place for him…and mostly…Tebow is NOTHING like Moore. I like Doug Martin for second or third round RB pick, while I’m on the BSU homer wagon.
BlueNOrangeNIdaho - January 25, 2012
As a Nebraska alum
I would be ecstatic to have Lavonte. The guy is a flat out playmaker who will tackle anything that move.
