5 months ago: DENVER, CO - JANUARY 1: Willis McGahee #23 of the Denver Broncos runs with the ball during the game against the Kansas City Chiefs at Sports Authority Field at Mile High on January 1, 2012 in Denver, Colorado. (Photo by Garrett W. Ellwood/Getty Images)
After 1-4 start to the season, and then a "fluke" win over the Miami Dolphins on the road, it looked like the Denver Broncos were primed to be picking high in the draft, presumably replacing Tim Tebow as the starting quarterback and moving on 100 percent from the Josh McDaniels era.
After a blowout loss on their own turf to the Detroit Lions, being mocked at home and getting flat out embarrassed, it was starting to look like this team might not win another game the rest of the season.
Then, the magic started to happen. It does not matter if you think the comebacks were because of Tebow, the defense, the special teams, the coaching, or some other-worldly power--they happened, and the Broncos are in the playoffs because they ripped off six straight wins and seven out of eight in the middle of their season.
Sure, it wasn't pretty. We trailed in Miami by 15 with barely enough time to put one touchdown on the board before garbage time, much less come back and win. We trailed on the road in Oakland and wound up coming back to win in impressive fashion. We dominated Kansas City on their home field, went into San Diego and overcame a 10 point deficit, and came back to beat a surprisingly upstart Minnesota Vikings team in one of the toughest places to play in the NFL.
We beat the Chicago Bears down 10 points with 2 minutes remaining, and at 8-5, it looked like this Broncos team could seriously contend with a red hot New England team in December.

Something happened in the Patriots game, though. The Broncos couldn't hold on to the ball, and the defense couldn't overcome the offensive woes.
After getting out to a 7-0 lead against Buffalo, the Broncos got thrashed and couldn't take advantage of missed field goals and missed opportunities early for the Bills.
Then, despite shutting out Kansas City for quarters two, three, and four, the Broncos were unable to put one touchdown on the board the entire game and finished the season on a three game losing streak--again.
This time, though, the Broncos still made the playoffs. As has been the theme of the season, despite getting off to a bad start, finishing was the only thing that mattered and while the Broncos needed a little help from the San Diego Chargers in the last week, it's not because of the Chargers they are in the playoffs.
The Broncos and their players worked hard to get to eight victories, just one year removed from picking 2nd in the draft and being one of the worst Broncos squads in team history.
Pat Bowlen cleaned house, and then the new regime came in and cleaned house, and while this team was off to a predictably boring and sluggish start, the only thing that matters is that they finished with eight wins, in good enough position to make the playoffs.
It doesn't matter how you get to the dance, it just matters that you get an invite, because there are plenty of teams right now that would trade places with the Denver Broncos in a heartbeat.
Heck, that's where we've been since 2005-06 when we got shillacked by the Pittsburgh Steelers on our home field with a chance to go to the Super Bowl. We have been the fans saying, "Man, I would love to be the 7-9 Seahawks right now. Yeah, that was us.
That's why I find it so surprising how many people are complaining about how we "backed in" to the playoffs. I don't really care how we got there, as I am sure many of you will agree, even if it meant we had to have a little bit of help from our big brother who has been beating us up all these years, and it might have been a tough pill to swallow, but we're there all the same.
The Broncos might be going into the playoffs with a chip on their shoulder, or they might just be going in down in the dumps. They lost a team captain and one of the nicest guys on the team in Chris Kuper to one of the most ugly and disgusting injuries I have ever seen in my life, and they only won three out of eight games at home this season. I was there for one, the two point victory over the Cincinnati Bengals where Jonathan Wilhite was making big plays and Kyle Orton was still the quarterback.
Now, the Broncos have Tim Tebow at the helm, who is playing the worst football I have seen him play this year. When we were winning games, Tebow was not turning the ball over, and despite his poor completion percentage, he was still able to get the job done and at least help the offense be opportunistic.
Now that he is losing fumbles and throwing picks, the offense isn't getting into any sort of rhythm, and the defense is on the field that much more than they should be.
Of course, you could make an argument about coaching, dropped passes, etc., but the bottom line is, we gave Tebow a lion's share of the credit when we were winning games, so he's inevitably going to take most of the blame when we lose.
He knows he has to get better. The Broncos have plenty of tape on Tebow, seeing what he can do and they are not just going to look at a box score or read stats on Pro Football Outsiders.
That being said, Tebow has to step up. If he plays like he has the last three weeks, heck the last four weeks against Pittsburgh, we might just be exactly what everyone says we're going to be in the playoffs--a one-and-done.
But if there's one thing I know about Tebow, and a lot of this Broncos team, it's that guys step up when it's time to make clutch plays, and I think that's what you'll see this weekend against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
I am really hoping the Broncos start calling more pass plays that involve receivers being spread out. I realize that Tebow needs the extra blockers to extend plays and allow him to take his time to make decisions, but I wonder what would happen if you gave him more players to get the ball to, extra options in the pass game.
I also wonder what would happen if the Broncos actually implemented the screen passing game into their offensive attack, something that went on injured reserve along with Knowshon Moreno. The Broncos seem to refuse to off-set eight and nine man fronts with the screen game, something that seriously baffles me. they also don't run any crossing routes or drag routes from what I can see.
But, that's enough of my complaining. Basically, I believe the Broncos are good enough to beat the Steelers, a beaten up Steelers team that is going to be motivated to prove that they should have been division champions. I'm not just hoping for good effort from the Denver, I'm hoping this team can prove these last three weeks were just bumps in the road in what has otherwise been a very entertaining and fun season to watch.
The last time the Broncos' season ended in the postseason against Pittsburgh, it was in a 34-17 loss that I can still very clearly remember. This time around, maybe the Broncos can get the upper hand and be the team with the young quarterback and upstart defense who shocks everyone in the playoffs.
Maybe, just maybe.

I would like to see a go-for-broke game
I don’t expect much. Neither does anyone else. We are bigger underdogs than we were against the Patriots. But this time we are in the playoffs rather than “backing into” them. Anyone saying “anything less than a super Bowl ring is not good enough” – like I’m sure we will hear from the Steelers and such – is spouting rubbish.
We’ve got so many young players and players who haven’t really played much. I want to see what we’ve actually got. I want to see every gimmick play that we haven’t played. I want to see us go for 1st down on 4th and shorts. What I don’t want to see is a bunch of three-and-punts. I’m sick of that.
If we get blown out — well at least it will be an exciting game where we took chances and saw all our Broncos doing what they could do to win. And there’s a good chance that playing this sort of game is precisely what it will take to win. Which will be even better.
Put it all out there Broncos.
yibberat - January 3, 2012
What he said.
Trinidad Jack - January 3, 2012
agreed. Let's see what Tebow can do "unleashed".
The FO has a huge off season decision to make reguarding the QB position, either backup or starter and it’s going to be based on Tebow’s play this year. To include this pressure packed playoff game vs one of the greatest defensive minds the game has ever known.
KoloradoKaos - January 3, 2012
We wish they would Release the Beast but it ain't gonna happen.
Boiler etc - January 3, 2012
I've aked this earlier in the season,
why don’t they just let Tim Tebow throw the ball like it’s natural for him to throw the ball? Don’t worry about his throwing motion being perfect. (What is perfect anyway?) His throwing motion seemed to work for him then, I bet it would work for him now. But I don’t think it will ever work if people keep forcing him to change it.
I think there were a couple, or a few, pretty decent side-armed throwers in the NFL in the past. I wonder if they got the grief about their throwing motion that Tim Tebow gets.
CompUser - January 3, 2012
I guess that should have been a reply to KoloradoKaos.
CompUser - January 3, 2012
Honest question CompUser
What leads you to believe “they” are trying to change Tebow’s throwing motion?
I have seen no evidence of this.
firstfan - January 3, 2012
nor I
I think they are rolling with what McD left them, and coaching him on the gameplans, rather than the position. Sure, there will always be the one on one with the QB coach, but I think mainly they are coaching for the games right now.
Mechanics-wise, I expect them to drill him hard in the offseason with taking a snap from center and dropping back to different levels, while going through his reads specific to the offense. Then I think they will work on movement in the pocket, nothing serious, just some finetuning.
I strongly believe that a quicker release will come with quicker decisions, insofar as we perceive it. But for now, they are working from his strengths.
Jeremy Bolander - January 4, 2012
I do remember Bernie Kosar really being
scrutinized for is sidearm motion, it took winning on his part for him to rid himself of the stigma in the media. Winning solves everything in pro sports. TT has already proven he can win in the nfl solely based on his will to win…anxious to see him develop the necessary skill-set now and I believe he will. All it requires is patience by the coaches and front office, something the nfl is not famous for. The good thing is that TT loves being coached, wants to be coached…Fox needs to jump on that and spend the time necessary in the off season getting him coached up.
rubincarterrocks - January 4, 2012
here’s the story of the hurricane…
Wrong Rubin Carter huh?
FrankWyt - January 4, 2012
Ha, yes FrankWyt! Actually, I had heard of "The Hurricane"
(never saw the movie) but did not know any history or who he was, you did get me to look it up though.
No, my avatar Rubin was the prototype for “nose guards” in the day, would be considered smallish today but one tough dude, got to see him up close and personal when I was in HS as the Broncos were sending a team of rookies around to play basketball against HS coaches at different HSs in the state. Hard to imagine pro athletes doing something like that nowadays.
rubincarterrocks - January 4, 2012
Lol. Yeah trust me I know a bit about both Rubin Carters (and Bob Dylan’s song about the boxer)
That’s awesome that you got to do that, and yeah it is hard to imagine athletes nowadays doing it.
On the smallish thing…it’s crazy how things have changed. As recent as the mid 80’s William Perry was considered huge, even by football player standards. Today…he’s an undersized guard or tackle.

Just win this one for us boys. For the fans, for Colorado. You can go on to lose at NE or BAL or wherever, but dont let the Steelers come away with a win here. Defend the house
Calikula - January 3, 2012

Agree. Especially against Pittsburgh. I was at the monday night game in 09 and the stupid towels had taken over. On top of that I still have the 05 playoff game stuck in my craw. Beat the friggen steelers!
Whenever you have a great running game and a great defense you always have a chance.

How would a wild card victory that earns you the right to face teams as tough as the Ravens or Pats equal to getting beat handily in the game to go to the Super Bowl?
Never mind. It’s “karma” . It fits the “yahoo” mentality.
Just so you know, I’m just messing around. Mostly because I’ve seen you on the game thread of the team we’ve played almost every game this year. I can understand not liking a team, but sucking up to all their opponents? that’s weird.
Plus I know how bitter you are about the Steelers, and it’s fun to me.
Don’t worry, the headhunting, dirty, rapist, terrorist, drunk driving, pot smoking, coke snorting, devil worshiping, cheap shotting, no tax paying, non voting, school zone speed limit ignoring, child immunization rejecting, fire wood moving, red (or blue) state supporting, anti American, furry animal killing, Scarface type bad guys are coming to Denver soon. If they aren’t killed or possessed at your witchcraft/Nazi museum (Denver International Airport) Then we’re going to have a football game. Hopefully, for once, we can keep it on the field, like the players will have to.

Oh…btw…the Orange Crush had steroid users too. In fact, every team had a bunch of them. They were legal. (or, at least not regulated)
FrankWyt - January 4, 2012
Yup everyone used em. Probably still do
you cant tell me pro athletes are getting as big as they are naturally. Like one of your posts above about William Perry, back in the 80’s he was huge, now he’d be considered undersized. We had a guy we called Big Vick last year at 321, he slimmed down to 285 and now we call him Little Vick. Only in the NFL is a 285 lb man considered “little”
Calikula - January 4, 2012
I agree. I was really hoping that HgH testing was going to happen this year.
because he NFL needs to be cleansed. The public and MSM are under the misconception that football is one of, if not all of the following:
A Black man’s sport.
A Big man’s sport.
A Fast man’s sport.
Luckily some of those stereotypes are being challenged by players like Gronk, MJD, Welker, Rice, Hillis, Sproles, Allen, Weddle….etc.
It’s a football players sport.
KoloradoKaos - January 5, 2012
I dont think they'll ver do HgH testing
can you imagine how many people would get busted? Only like the entire NFL. It be like if Vince McMahon enforced no roids for the WWE, with the exception of the little guys like Rey Mysterio
Calikula - January 5, 2012
sad but true.
KoloradoKaos - January 5, 2012
I'd like to see the NFL level the playing field though

KoloradoKaos - January 5, 2012
The major difference is a complete and utter lack of respect for the Orange Crush
and the Denver Broncos in general by the narrow minded MSM and the HoS.
There are at least 5 Picksburg defensive players in the Hall of Shame from that era and ZERO from the Broncos.
HoS is a joke. The NFL should be embarrassed. I’m embarrassed for them.

Tebow is under more pressure than you or I could even fathom
ElwayFanJ - January 3, 2012
this
the cold sore of doom
broncowrestler29 - January 3, 2012
Tim Tebow is probably under intense pressure as you say, but I think he also bites his lip.
I’ve known a couple people who tuck the corner of their bottom lip behind the top row of teeth when they’re really into, or deeply thinking about, a task at hand. And when they do it a lot, they get a sore on their bottom lip exactly like the one on Tim Tebow’s bottom lip.
CompUser - January 3, 2012
I don't think it's a cold sore.
Watching T2’s pressers and interviews, he has a horrible tendency to constantly bite and lick his lips which makes them incredibly dry. They probably just cracked and bled.
I now realize I’ve way overanalyzed this and am kinda embarrassed.
iBleedorangeandblue - January 3, 2012

HarvJNep2n - January 3, 2012
That's exactly what it is...
He got popped good on either that fumble against NE or a sack and was bleeding pretty good. Got it whacked again in Buffalo. Not a cold sore.

correct, and it hasn't completely healed.
He’d be better off without that pesky facemask getting in the way of the defenders’ fists. ha
Boiler etc - January 3, 2012

It’s his physical style of play…. not a canker sore. I saw him get busted a few weeks back the first time. I didn’t see what caused this new one, but Tim sure is one tough SOB.

I commented on this very same subject. Tim seems like he’s holding back some in the pros…. emotionally. We need that guy for Florida who was rah rah…. who was that perfect blend of fire & ice. We saw it last year, and we’ve seen glimpses of it with 5 minutes left in games, but I want to hear Tim fired the hell up after a loss – giving us our own version of his classic speech that was immortalized in Florida.
PaleHorse78 - January 4, 2012
One astute commenter on here (sorry cant remember who or where) pointed out that opposing D-lines and LBs arent selling out rushing Tebow, they are content to contain and make him make a mistake. Setting up a screen wouldnt work often since d-lines wouldnt bite, they would sit back and maintain their gap assignments. But Im sure there are situations where we could implement screens, but they would be few and far between.
also, the lack of short passes is irritating. If our receivers are being manned-up, there is no reason DT or Decker cant do simple slants and box out the man in coverage.
Teboner - January 3, 2012
They might not be throwing it if Tim isn't comfortable with those reads and or throws
It seems to me he greatly prefers throwing sideline routes. In fact, there has been more than a couple times where he’s missed open guys in the middle of the field because he was looking so hard at the sideline routes. I think I remember a wide open Matt Willis doing jumping jacks in the middle of the field on one play against SD trying to get Tim’s attention haha.
This is just speculation on my part, though.
HBobbyT - January 3, 2012
Been some blown routes on the short throws of late
Decker didn’t play a very solid game route running on Sunday. He ran the wrong route on the flea-flicker, and blew up the short crossing route that Fells was running in front of Tebow. There were a few other poor short route “reads” by the receivers on Sunday as well. And, Tim flat out missed a couple. Was definitely a team failure in the passing game.
That being said, there will be opportunities against the Steelers. Houston ran all over them and Baltimore threw all over them. It’s a good defense, but not as dominant in years past. The absence of Clark could really hurt Polamalu’s free-lancing. Clark covers his ass a lot, allowing Troy to guess—which he does frequently. Steelers have been particularly poor against tall WRs and TEs that can move. We might actually see Julius Thomas in a game (wouldn’t that be nice), because of the matchup problems he presents. Ray Rice in the screen game to Harrison’s side was very effective as well. No one except Freeney is more undisciplined at holding the edge than Harrison. Be interesting to see how much he’s willing to change that habit.
shasta77 - January 3, 2012
I'd like to see Tebow hit Harrison helmet to helmet
NYCBronx - January 3, 2012
Nice!
He’s certainly earned a good mash-up from a QB, hasn’t he?!
shasta77 - January 3, 2012
Yep
So he can see the difference between a defenseless reciever or QB. He will know what it feels like to hit a REAL running QB. He will be TEBOWLED OVER!
JOEGATOR15 - January 3, 2012
I'm afraid this might be the game Tebow gets hurt running.
Harrison does not care about fines or suspensions or whatnot. But ti would be nice to see him ejected again from being a jerk.
HarvJNep2n - January 3, 2012

Thanks, didn't see that.
HBobbyT - January 3, 2012
To provide the best target you run away from the QBs throwing hand
Where Decker runs once he doesn’t get the ball is likely the route he was supposed to run all along. Either a skinny post or double-move across the middle.
shasta77 - January 3, 2012
Sayre. Been awhile.
You’re saying there’s a chance.
Digger24 - January 3, 2012

the new Bradfather - January 3, 2012
There's always a chance
We need a hefty dose of Mile High Magic mixed with Tebow Time, and a sprinkle of Von/Doom/Dawk to win this game. Blitzburgh will be without Mendenhall and Ryan Clark (am I missing anyone else?), so I think we got this. It all depends on what Tebow / Broncos offense shows up that day, but I say we shock the world in dramatic, story board, Tebow fashion on Sunday. Super Bowl contenders until we ain’t baby!!! C’mon DT…. c’mon Timmy and Deck…. get your heads up out your arses and compete baby!!!!
PaleHorse78 - January 4, 2012
Raplisburger is also nursing a high ankle sprain so he is fairly immobile in the pocket
His ability to extend plays by moving in the pocket is one of his strengths.
I expect the Steelers to ran a lot of short routes to keep our pass rush from getting to their less mobile than usual QB. Much in the same way that KC did with Orton. I am also expecting a heavy dose of screen passes that attempt to take advantage of VonDoom selling out for the QB.

Last week was when
I thought the Bronco offense would STEP UP, get it TOGETHER and get it DONE. They didn’t and that hurt. Now, we are expecting it again. I really hope that this week, Tebow and the boys can deliver. The last three weeks have been painful for all of us. Needless to say, optimism reigns eternal: Denver 31 – Pittsburgh 10!
Broncos15 - January 3, 2012
I'd like to see the Broncos get back to being respected again, that something that's been missing for a long time...
There’s no respectability in losing 3 straight to end the regular season and hope for a division foe to help us out. There’s no honor in that and I believe the team wants to prove they belong there and taking on the Pittsburgh Steelers is a stepping stone in gaining that honor. Winning 3 playoff games in row is tough for anybody to do let alone the Broncos the way they’ve been struggling lately. But it’s not impossible and to get to the next step every man has to perform his job to the best of his ability and not hope that a banged up team coming to Denver has any inkling of giving up, they want to win too…
If the Broncos play like they did against the Jets or the Bears then they should have a good chance, since both them have solid defenses…
bfree2bronc - January 3, 2012
Maybe we backed into the playoffs...
I prefer to think of it as moonwalking in with style.
Pittsburgh had the stingiest defense of the year. I looked at their four losses and find the following numbers: passing – 187, 215, 178, 289… rushing – 100, 170, 180, 67. I think the Broncos are absolutely capable of putting up 180 passing and 180 rushing. Near as I can tell, the Broncos haven’t dropped under 125 yards rushing in a game in quite awhile, have been around 150 – 175 pretty regularly, and have dropped 200 on several teams. The Broncos put up some great rushing numbers against Miami and Chicago, both top 5 rushing defenses.
The other key is that Pittsburgh is not a particularly great rushing team. The Broncos need to shut down the rushing game and force Roethlisberger into making a few boneheaded plays, which he is prone to do, and this can be done. Pittsburgh actually had a -8 turnover differential this year.
1) Hold onto the ball.
2) Hold onto the ball.
3) Play to our rushing ability.
4) Force one bad Pittsburgh play.
5) Hold onto the ball.

You forgot one other thing
Hold onto the ball.
circasurvive - January 3, 2012
that goes without saying
but the way we’ve had fumbleitis the past few weeks, I suppose it bears mentioning, oh well, the pressure is on the Steelers and they are shorthanded, make them pay!
the new Bradfather - January 3, 2012
I think the whole "hold onto the ball" thing really got to Tebow and made him less likely to pull the trigger
si_ice - January 3, 2012
We are the 12th out of 12 playoff teams
according to Brian BIllick, but I don’t care, we control our fate, let’s do this guys, I believe!
the new Bradfather - January 3, 2012
as was Seattle last year against the defending SB champions - and we know how that ended :-)
teams with no expectation to win play looser and with more abandon, in theory.
DE_BroncoFan - January 4, 2012
I agree with Tim Hasselback, not a good matchup for Pittsburgh
They may be a big favorite, but what the Steelers are built to stop isn’t what the Broncos do. The Steelers defense is built to stop the Patriots/Packers/Saints, throw first and run second approach. They like to go man coverage on the outside, with a blend of Tampa 2 and single safety, and zone blitz from everywhere. Against teams that can run the ball, that’s dangerous. You guess wrong and the RB is deep into the secondary. Throw in a QB that is a hybrid RB and you get the end to the Jets game—one guy misses and there is no help.
The key to this game will be completing a few passes early in all 3 zones of the field: deep sideline, in the flat behind a go-route, in the seam to a TE or slot receiver. This will put pressure on the safeties to think twice about crowding the box—that’s how Houston beat them. LeBeau was very hesitant with the zone blitzes after Foster burned them with a few runs against it. We could do the same. But it will require at least some threat of the pass—or they will put 8 in the box all day.
Lastly, in an ironic twist, the Steelers have lived and died with their QB extending plays (which he may not be able to do in this game, due to his ankle injury). But, on defense, they have been routinely burned by mobile QBs. Even Seneca Wallace gave them trouble. So Tebow will have his opportunities to both run, or simply roll away from pressure and look downfield for the big play (Flacco killed them with this).

Tim Hasselbeck has a good take
but I assure you his wife never does, or so women tell me

diviesti - January 3, 2012
Agreed
I was at the Seahawks game last year. Once it started to get ugly for the Saints, you could tell they weren’t prepared for a battle. Let the Steelers look ahead and take us lightly. This could be the Vegas spoiler game of the year.
shasta77 - January 3, 2012
What?
We didn’t finish. We benefited because the Raiders couldn’t finish either. I wish I had all your guys confidence. Honestly…I am very happy with where we are. I thought this season would be worse then last and never thought we’d be in the playoffs. Tim has earned the “starter” title for next pre-season but he still needs to make great leaps for next season. I’d love to beat Pittsburgh just so I can rub it in my brother-in-law’s face. But everyone has to admit, Tebow has taken two steps back since the New England game.
BlueNOrangeNIdaho - January 3, 2012
Re-watched the Bills game and not sure I agree
Tim missed some throws against the Bills, but his receivers weren’t sharp either. He basically had a bad quarter (and it was really bad). The one pick that isn’t entirely on him was the throw to Decker. I played both the slot and wideout, and on that play Decker’s responsibility is to know where the safety help is so he can undercut pursuit to the ball and breakup the play (at minimum). Instead he kept running his route, allowed the safety to cut in front of him and intercept the ball. Young player mistake. It happens.
Against the Chiefs, Tim was clearly tentative to cut it loose on several plays. He also had some receivers in the same area (always a sign of a route mistake) that shouldn’t have been. And, as we’ve had all year, some untimely drops. This is all stuff that can easily be turned around in a week. Let’s hope that’s this week. The opportunities will be there. The team just needs to execute. We’re in the dance. Anything can happen.
shasta77 - January 3, 2012
agree
a simple look at the box score clearly shows that TT was playing fiune until the 4thQ of the Bills game… not great by any stretch, but no worse than he had for much the winning streak. In the 4thQ, the wheels fell off… so much for “clutchiness”.
cjfarls - January 4, 2012
training camp will be interesting because Tim Tebow still can't win on the practice field
unless the coaches continue with this hybrid pro/college style offense. What happens if the FO brings in a college player from a pro-style offense and a FA QB with a traditional pro-style offense background? Tim Tebow still will not be able to beat them out in an open competition for the starting job.
So does the FO stick with the hybrid system and bring in QB’s that have run the option to back Tebow up? This is quite a fix that Josh McDaniels has left the Broncos FO in and I do not envy them and the decisions that they have to make in the next couple of months.
KoloradoKaos - January 6, 2012
Steve Young just put it very well!
None of this “developmental” crap this week. Don’t try to force TT to be a pocket passer this week. Throw the kitchen sink at them.
It’s the playoffs, and you let Tim do what he does best. Spread the field wide, and don’t discourage Tebow from running…..encourage it!
There’s really nothing to lose by going for broke is there?
Broncotodd - January 3, 2012
there isn't for us
because no one expects us to do anything, except us of course!
the new Bradfather - January 3, 2012
Exactly!
It’s a one game tournament. If you win, you get to play in the tournament next week.
I think we may see some things that both the OC and DC have been holding back all year. We’ve seen both our WR throw passes, flea-flickers, double-options, etc. The Steelers defense is a high-risk, high-reward defense. We take advantage of that early, and it could change the whole play-calling from their side. Run a wheel-route to JJ out of play-action (Harrison couldn’t cover my mother) and you get the safeties thinking twice about loading the box.
Big Ben will give us a chance for both picks and fumbles. This is the week we have to have them. We stuff the run early and turn loose VonDoom and we could find ourselves on the receiving end of some defensive touchdowns (instead of the giving side). I can also see a big return for Royal or Willis
shasta77 - January 3, 2012
This is what I think!
keep James Harrison off of Tebow or he’ll give him a concussion and not feel sorry
the new Bradfather - January 3, 2012
am I to understand that giving concussions is totally ok, as long as he convinces you he’s sorry?
FrankWyt - January 3, 2012
that's how Goodell treats Harrison
I mean he only got suspended for one game on a hit that could be completely avoided, that’s what I’m talking about
the new Bradfather - January 3, 2012
Everyone on their couch is more than qualified to decide what could have or couldn’t have happened on a football field, while viewing it on a television or computer monitor. If they have preexisting bias, they are even more qualified. These are facts.
But I just wanted your opinion, not Goodell’s. Your comment said “he’ll give him a concussion and not feel sorry” . That kind of says that one of those by itself is ok, but the two together is not.
FrankWyt - January 3, 2012
Are you a lawyer?
You are trying to parse and twist words into something they never meant, pretending that’s the right meaning. Don’t worry, Harrison has professionals to defend him. And yeah, he needs them, because he is a headhunter and one of maybe top 2 dirtiest players in the league. He’ll get hit with more penalties from the league, because he’s actively working to damage the most valuable thing the league has – start QBs.
si_ice - January 3, 2012
I am actually.
But alas, I should rephrase, “it appears as though that’s what you’re saying” instead of “That kind of says”
FrankWyt - January 3, 2012
sustained. lmao. this exchange was funny.
HarvJNep2n - January 3, 2012
I agree with this...
Let’s go five receiver sets and pistol formation. And fergodssake throw a damn slant against that tight, bump and run coverage. The weakest link on the offense right now is our receivers, hopefully that improves.
BlueNOrangeNIdaho - January 3, 2012
A true spread option
Tebow was prolific in college running the spread option and totally agree with Steve Young. Develop Tebow in the off season. Let him do what he does best and run something that the Steelers will be TOTALLY unprepared for. . . Tebow has a confidence problem. Put him in the true spread and see what he can do.

broncosfaninphilly - January 3, 2012 via mobile
Our Rushing game is great... BUT... it DOES NOT account for many touch downs!
5 TDs from RBs this year.
If we’re going to compete in the scoring sense, McCoy has to find a way to move the ball more by passing. As impressive as his schemes are for rushing, I’ve been equally UN-IMPRESSED with his schems for passing (or Fox holding McCoy back).
This team will HAVE to move the ball consistently to make any noise in the playoffs and that means LESS PLAY ACTION HOME-RUN BOMB type plays, and more 3-step drop – slant, TE curl/release, RB flats, crossing routes and drags or screens.
WATCH BRADY AND ROGERS. These guys don’t throw 10-30 yard bombs every play, yet that is what McCoy has designed for Tebow to do the past 3 loses (and maybe all of his starts until the last 5 minutes when he implements the 5 WR spread).
Tebow is more than capable of running a pass scheme that utilizes underneath 5-10 yard routes. Look at the games we have in the last 5 minutes… He is capable of finding open receivers in the short-mid range routes.
We don’t need to play HOMERUN ball every week. DEFENSES HAVE FIGURED THAT OUT ABOUT MCCOY – not Tebow…
AlwaysRightSometimes - January 3, 2012

Calikula - January 3, 2012
Been thinking about some interesting 4 wide options
Picture a 4 wide look with Royal in one slot and JJ (or Lance or even a TE, like Green or JT) in the other. Gives you some interesting options. You could run out of this to WM,as we have, but you’ve also got run options to either slot receiver. You could throw, with a multitude of routes available, particularly like the wheel-route and seam possibilities against a zone-blitz defense. And, of course you’ve got Tebow run/pass options to either side.
Because JJ is an option veteran who is explosive in the open field. Having someone like him in this kind of alignment creates some matchup nightmares for a 3-4 defense that wants to bring LB/Safety pressure, daring them to choose to cover him or chip and release. Would love to see this make the defense think.
shasta77 - January 3, 2012
Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
The only way we win this game is if the steelers bus can’t find the stadium.
Money says no points scored by the broncos until next season… If we make tim be a pocket quarterback.
scottwchicago - January 3, 2012
I respectfully disagree
This is not a dominant Steelers team (see them limp past Cleveland yesterday? How about the Jags earlier in the year?). Good yes, dominant no.
Big Ben’s biggest weapon is his ability to extend plays, with a bum ankle that’s less likely. He’s not going to run away from anyone on our defense. And, as SF showed, you give him pressure from the outside consistently and he’ll make mistakes—since he’s throwing all arm right now. Redmond is streaky as a RB. Stuff him early and he’s done. Plus, he’s a fumbler.
On the defensive side, the loss of Clark could be huge. Exposes the middle of the field when Polamalu is crowding the line. Woodley has got a gimpy hammy, so making him cover anyone is bad for the Steelers—and it could really impact him rushing from the edge.
We play clean, run the ball like we have since Tebow took over, throw some new looks that dare Harrison et al to lose contain, and push the 10-15 yard middle of the defense we have a great shot. The Steelers don’t matchup well with us because we’re more like Houston than we are the Patriots. Zone blitzes don’t work well on teams that can hammer the ball through the middle of the defense.
shasta77 - January 3, 2012
Have to agree…this is not a slam dunk by any stretch.
I do disagree with a couple things though.
It wasn’t really pressure that made Ben screw up against SF. It was overthrowing because he couldn’t plant. He handles pressure just fine most of the time.
And about Redman being streaky or being a fumbler. As far as fumbler, those were his first two fumbles of his career. And he hasn’t really had enough carries to be considered streaky.
Woodley is gimpy, but he never covers anyone anyway. That’s the MLB’s on those types of assignments
But still this game could go either way.
FrankWyt - January 3, 2012
Also
I would attribute Ben’s crappy performance in SF to lack of practice. He did not practice at all.
No practice affected his throws and timing more than his injury IMO.

lol
AlwaysRightSometimes - January 3, 2012
Oh, but it does matter how we got here...
That win streak was nice, but the largely unimpressive way in which we won most of those games is precisely what has been getting us beat lately. Its not much different from the win streak of 2009, when nobody wanted to believe the bottom might fall out once opponents realized we didn’t have the talent to adjust along with them once they figured us out.
If winning was the only thing that mattered, nobody would look at the film after a victory. Improving matters, too, and Tim Tebow, often even in victory, consistently looks lost. And I don’t want to hear the excuses – Andy Dalton is a rookie second round pick and he looks more like a pro than a lot of veterans. Tebow plays like he’s been a tight end all his life.
The Steelers are definitely vulnerable but remember, this is a team that got destroyed in Buffalo and couldn’t score more than three points on an equally listless Chefs team led by a guy we ran out of Denver six weeks ago.
The whole team needs to step it up this week but I am hard pressed to expect Tim Tebow to suddenly start looking like a pro this week. Sure, it could happen. But there’s a pretty good chance we’re walking into an epic beatdown Sunday.
I’ll keep my fingers crossed. You should too.
Getcha Kool Aid ready.

the new Bradfather - January 4, 2012
The Chiefs D matches up pretty well with our current offense.
They stayed in man coverage all game and rushed to contain on the pass forcing TT to stay in the pocket. In most cases TT only had two or three receivers in the pattern and on multiple occasions they ran the wrong routes. When they did run the correct routes, they weren’t getting much separation.
The Steelers D does not have the man coverage corners that the Chiefs have. So if they try to follow the defensive blueprint that the Bills and the Chiefs used, they will be out of their element (zone blitzing/zone coverage).

Lost Broncos Mojo
Last seen in Mile High Stadium in early December 2011… not the prettiest mojo but effective. Suspicious that Tom Brady stole it in the 2nd quarter of Patriots game. Will pay big reward if returned before Sunday. Sincerely, EFX
Ugh… if only the Broncos could find their mojo before Sunday… and shock the NFL world by delivering a spanking on the Steelers… that would make up for losing to the Chiefs.
