Smith to Oakland Not Happening

Apparently unless you are applying for a head coaching position during the divisional week of the AFC Playoffs the only way you are getting to Oakland through Denver is the next time the Broncos visit the Raiders at O.co Coliseum.

Former Denver defensive coordinator Dennis Allen turned current Oakland head coach was today denied permission to speak to current Broncos' linebacker coach Richard Smith according to ESPN.com.

You will remember that Smith was amongst the few candidates to replace Allen at defensive coordinator, a job that eventually went to former Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio.

I am assuming that the Raiders were seeking Smith to interview as the defensive coordinator in Oakland. A position that he could be next in line for if Del Rio were to skip town as quickly as the last six defensive coordinators Denver has employed.

Good, Allen left us don’t let him gut our coaching staff to help the damn Raiders now.

Lol did Allen really think that was going to happen?
Just one more reason to boo Allen

I don’t begrudge a guy getting a chance to fulfill his dream and become a head coach but when you go to a division rival do you really think you are going to get a chance to cherry pick the staff you came from? Either Allen is naive or extremely ill prepared and egotistical. Unfortunately I think he’ll be a good coach at least initially especially with the talent on the Raiders roster. Regardless Allen doesn’t understand the Broncos Raiders rivalry. I’m sure he will soon!

I think that he was just seeing what he could get.

I mean, wouldn’t you if you were in his situation?

I wouldn't

Of course it is easy to say when not in a man’s shoes, but I don’t understand how some of these guys do what they do. Wasn’t like the Raiders would be the only place he would ever be able to be a HC. The man is dead to me, because I hate the faiders and everything they and their fans stand for.

There are a lot of things I don’t like in this world, but there are only 2 things I hate: faiders and the giant N. I hope they lose every game and he gets fired . . .

The guy has no ties to Denver. This is a business to them. Finding a guy like Rick Dennison who bleeds Broncos blue and orange is rare in business.
Question

I thought a team couldn’t deny permission for a member of the coaching staff to interview if the interview as for a promotion?

Only for HC jobs.
Oh okay I had always thought it was for all promotions, good to know though

That said, I wouldn’t have really much cared if we lost Richard Smith to the Raiders… Nobody really wanted him for DC here, would it really be so bad if he was the DC of our arch rival?

But I think it’s nice to see some continuity at least on the defensive side of the ball. That’s always good. And I definitely don’t want to see Allen gutting our coaching staff to help the Raiders, yuck.

Yeah mate....it may NOT be just for HC, but believe thats a courtesy normally given...

My gut is Richard will be promoted to Asst Head Coach or have contract extended by the broncos.

Nice

So we block the Raiders from interviewing Richard Smith but we let them interview and hire Dennis Allen.

facepalm

Cant block interviews for HC jobs.
And also we ended upgrading the DC spot imo.
on a sidenote...

I’m watching the Denver/Pittsburgh game right now. The intro production was EPIC! I remember how I felt watching it live!

Boydy wins MVP of this thread

That is all…

Sweet Deal!

LOL. The guy has balls…Ya gotta give him that! He must be a bit naive to think he could get away with that one though. The biggest deal for an HC is choosing his staff, if I’m not mistaken, and it sure is nice that we aren’t making his job easy for him.

not only that, we sucked up Del Rio before he could go after him

thankfully!!!

Fox was all over Del Rio at the senior bowl, not only that, they have history together. I’m sure they talked about it while scouting players together for a bit, but something tells me it was a very short conversation… something like:

Fox: “Hey Jack”
Del Rio: “Hey John, how’s it going?”
Fox: “Good! I’m sorry you lost your job with Jacksonville”
Del Rio: “That’s okay, I’m looking forward to some change”
Fox: “Speaking of change, we just lost our defensive coordinator. You know you and I were a great team down in Carolina”
Del Rio: “I accept your proposal John!”
Fox (thinking to himself): “I never asked him
Fox: “Sounds good”
--Dead Silence the rest of the game——

Not where I thought you were going with that

With your intro line, I thought it would unfold like this:
Fox: “Speaking of change, we just lost our DC to Oakland.”
Del Rio: “Yeah, I heard. You know he called me about being his DC in Oakland.”
Fox: “Oh yeah? Why don’t you just take over his old spot in Denver?”
Del Rio: Sounds like a plan."

You know why our defense got better?

‘Cause the guy running it crosses his T’s and dots his i’s…… Even if he knew he would not get to interview his choices it is smart to ask anyway. You never know and you don’t end up with people asking why you didn’t try.
I am not surprised.

Del Rio is a better coach than Allen as Defensive Coordinator

Our defense will only get better. We thought we had a good defense and they were only like #20th in rank…

Get some consistent pressure up the middle by a DT and we’ll go from 20th to 15th real fast. Throw in a corner opposite of Champ who can cover and we’ll get to #10. Throw in a middle linebacker who doesn’t get out of position, can shed blocks and has a good nose for the ball, then we’ll be within the top 10 imo

I think you're right on, 55

Now just put some names to those three positions. Who is available for FA, draft, or trade that will make that prediction a reality?

Is it me, or does Allen look like a young Al Davis in that picture?!?
yes

very rat faced if u ask me. And that mole…. holy MOLEY!!!

YES! I just posted the same comment below before even reading the article and comments. Scary.
He better leave Wayne Nunnely alone too!
I think there may be a guy out there for him . . .

wink, wink, wink

I feel bad for his kids. Now they'll have to grow up Raider fans.
terms like retard will be thrown around rather casually
Haha!

That’s what he gets for going to the Raiders.

so that's what Satan looks like

thanks for the picture

Just a demon Brad, just a demon...He hasn't earned his pitch fork yet and pointed tail...
only a matter of time

unless he repents

Wow, looking at that picture DA almost reminds me of a young Al Davis. Eerie
oh yea...

Looks like being possessed by the young Al :)

Coach Fox brought the little snot out of the puss-gut they call New Orleans to the beautiful front range of Mile High and he leaves at the first note of promotion?

To the butt-hole of America no less in Choketown? There is a referrence to this story…“Even a dog returns to his volmit”…

I'd like to punch him in his smug face

Not sure why, but that pic rubs me the wrong way. Might be the wallpaper

it's like he's looking at me and celebrating his defection.

What happens to love when you can’t use it?

It turns to hate.

or he could be celebrating his defecation

Raiders don’t go to the toilet, they just leave it on the floor

There's a thin line between love and hate...
Maybe it's because he sort of looks like a young Al Davis.

IWait, that’s an oxymoron.
