4 months ago: DENVER, CO - JANUARY 08: Quarterback Tim Tebow #15 of the Denver Broncos celebrates his second quarter rushing touchdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Sports Authority Field at Mile High on January 8, 2012 in Denver, Colorado. The Broncos defeated the Steelers 29-23 in overtime. (Photo by Doug Pensinger/Getty Images)
On January 8th, 2009, Tim Tebow and the Florida Gators faced off against the Oklahoma Sooners and Sam Bradford in the national championship game. Tebow, continuing a tradition he had started that year, wore the Bible verse, "John 3:16" on his eye black during the game. The verse states:
"For God so loved the world, He gave His one and only son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life."
That verse was the number one search trend on Google thereafter, and Tebow's Gators went on to beat Oklahoma 24-14.
Exactly three years to the date, once again playing the role of underdog, that is again the most searched trend on Google, but Tebow didn't wear the verse on his face. This time, people made the connection based off of some very eerie numbers that Tebow posted in the Broncos' incredible wild card victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Tebow completed 10 passes on the game for 316 yards, an average of 31.6 yards per carry. The numbers were so oddly coincidental it didn't seem coincidental to a lot of people, and once again, Google is blowing up with searches for, "John 3:16."
In fact, the second most searched term on Google right now is Tim Tebow, the fifth is "broncos," and the sixth is "Denver Broncos."
I don't exactly know how to say this to people who want Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees and their teams to be the most popular in the NFL because they are proven and better than the Broncos, but there is a simple truth that so many people seem to have significant trouble admitting--Tim Tebow is the most popular athlete in the world, and the Denver Broncos are the most popular team in all of sports right now.
Any respectable journalist would have to admit that, even if they didn't want it to be true. Popular doesn't mean they're the best, but the Broncos continue to win game in improbable ways. This team is 4-0 in overtime this season, something that's remarkable in itself. But the fact that the Broncos went out and called the play they did last night with the Steelers creeping all but one guy up into the box was gutsy, and it paid off big time.
The Broncos took the new overtime rules, crumpled them up in a ball, and threw them over their shoulder and just said, "We're winning this in one play." At least, that had to be the mindset of Demaryius Thomas, who made one of the best tackling corners I have ever seen in Ike Taylor look like an annoying mosquito as he sprinted 80 yards to the end zone.
Like John was talking about on MHR Radio last night, there's something about overcoming adversity and winning a ball game. The Broncos should have had the game sealed on Ben Roethlisberger's backward pass, but thanks to a rule put in place by Jay Cutler himself, they were not allowed to get the call reversed and Pittsburgh drove down the field for their first touchdown shortly thereafter.
The Broncos also have had to overcome a serious wave of facemask calls that have been missed, which is so astounding to me since everyone and their dog can see the facemask happening from every living room watching the game, but the officials can't see it on the field.
Regardless, the Broncos were able to do the impossible, at least, according to a majority of people NFL fans listen to. One person went on Twitter yesterday, asking for predictions on the day's games. I said, "Broncos and Giants!" and he responded, "broncos? Really?"
Really.
Like John said, I will never have the guts to pick against the Broncos in a game, and I hope I never do. I am 9-8 on my Broncos picks this year, and I couldn't be happier about it. I know no one is going to pick Denver to beat New England either, but I'll formally start the, "Broncos beating the Patriots," bandwagon if it hasn't already, in which case I'll jump right on.
This team was down in the dumps after losing three straight games and backing into the playoffs. All that talk about Brady Quinn coming in for packages, losing Chris Kuper to the grossest leg injury I've seen, and having no fullback for the first time pretty much all year were all reasons to doubt the Broncos, but this team has proven again and again that you simply have to believe that something great is going to happen.
And it did.
The Broncos took it to the reigning AFC champions in the first half, broke down slightly in the second half, and it was Tim Tebow making plays despite once again being hammered all week by the national media. The confidence was there from Tim, and thus, the confidence was there from the rest of the team.
One area of this team that doesn't get enough love is the offensive line. They are extremely well-coached and have played excellent football since Tebow took over as the starting quarterback. We've not only led the league in rushing, but they have allowed Tebow to take his time and make reads, even if it is slower than other quarterbacks playing at this time of year.
That was very evident on Sunday night as the Broncos put up 447 yards and didn't allow a single sack against the number one ranked defense in the NFL, against the top ranked pass defense in the NFL. Against a team that has not given up more than 29 points all season except for a week one blowout loss against the Baltimore Ravens.
This Broncos team is one that I'm extremely proud of. That is something I have not said since the Patriots game six years ago in Denver.
All we fans can ask for at this point is another game, and guess what?
We got one. Who knew Tom Brady's words to Tebow after the Patriots' win earlier this year would hold so much weight a month later:
"Maybe we'll see you again."

Thank you Brazenwood!
I have enjoyed all your postings. Please write your insights about playoff next game on Jan 14. Transit Venus and Chiron are getting close to trine Bronco’s Neptune. Enjoy your day off and

Good stuff, Sayre
As metal sharpens metal, so do men sharpen men.
I probably butchered the quote, but the idea is the same. Tim Tebow makes better players and people of those that surround him. He has a way of making doubters look silly (stupid?). He defies conventional wisdom and beats the odds on any given Sunday. I, too, am proud of this Broncos team that he leads. And I’ll think twice before ever doubting him again.
Rodney A - January 9, 2012
I put that on a mug
It’s Proverbs 27:17, you got it close enough :)
Sayre Bedinger - January 9, 2012
I was looking for you here last night Rodney
But it looks like you’ve done a better job of beating you up than i could have. Way to man up!!!
asinsoin - January 9, 2012
I've had lots of practice lately lol
I picked two bad games and now this. Like Tebow, however, my confidence won’t be shaken. I’ll stand on my past victories and learn from current wrongs. This is a game of ‘what have you done lately’. Lately, I’ve been stupid.
Rodney A - January 9, 2012
Way to cop it on the chin man.
boydy2669 - January 9, 2012
I wasn't hiding, btw
And I wasn’t silently hoping for faiure. I was happy to be wrong. Truly.
Rodney A - January 9, 2012
I know you're true blue man, never doubted it.
You actually did a masterful job of defending your points. And to be honest there wasn’t much evidence of Tebows accuracy in tight situations…until last night.
asinsoin - January 9, 2012
Haha - I was looking for you too! You and I went at the whole Brady thing for hours...
But, I can truly say, I was happy you were wrong too! Hahaha, just kidding Rodney. Way to freaking MAN UP! I wish more people had the courage to say, ‘hey, I was wrong and I’ve never been happier.’
It took Steven A Smith 9 wins to man up, and it took Merril Hoge… err… nevermind, he’s still able to find ways to ignore anything Tebow does by saying it was everyone else on the team that did it.
Anyway, here’s to the Broncos win and a bunch of truly happy fans!

Whoever wins the Super Bowl will be more popular
But for now, I’m soaking it all up. Does Google break if we beat New England (a huge “if”)?

I'm not so much worried about Google breaking in that event...

If the Broncos make it to the SB, think of what this means

The word "Proud" does not even begin to express how I feel about our team
I dont really know if they have made a word that could describe it.
A great post. I think it sums it up for me nicely. I love this team and I love what they are doing. They are coming together and playing up to and beyond their abilities.
I think the Pats are in for a real surprise if we can show up in Indi, the way we showed up last night. Can you imagine that?? What a Cinderella story this could actually turn out to be, Even more than it already is.
I wonder if the Pope has TImmy on commission?? Maybe someone should send him a Jersey. :)
DBconvert - January 9, 2012
Proud!!
I don’t think that Tebow is Catholic…..but I understand what you were trying to say there with your Pope comment. :)
I’ve been trying to find the right word, too. Proud is probably the closest. It’s awesome to be a Broncos fan today!
uziguzi - January 9, 2012

Adam Fox - January 9, 2012
My bad. I didnt realise until after the fact, I figured I would get called out on it though. Thanks for not letting me down. :)

Great post
It is a great day to be a Broncos fan…
Honestly, I think the Broncos have a shot against the Patriots… They could have won the game earlier this year without turnovers… they pretty much gave that game away. I think if the Broncos play a good clean game this week and win the turnover battle, the Patriots are beatable…
Not to mention, I think it’s good that they are on the road this week. So far this year, I think overall the Broncos have played much better on the road then they have at home…
Go Broncos!
tjpmontana - January 9, 2012
Oh not its not just your opinion, its fact
Broncos are 5-3 road and 3-5 home this past regular season. they are better on the road
Calikula - January 9, 2012
However
I don’t think it’s a real factor to consider. It’s just a casuality…. If it was 7-1 on the road and 1-7 at home, oh then we should figure out what was happening.
Anyway, we have a fair shot taking care of the ball and exploring their defense. I just fear BB and his great adjustments.
Fabio Broncos - January 9, 2012
Worst part is, were 0-3 at home vs AFC west
We should have swept AFC west easily or at least won that Chiefs game. Fact is, were 1-8 vs AFC west at home since 09 and that is not good. We need to take back home field advantage. Its definitely a trend Fab and hopefully we can address that next year. Broncos wont get to play in Denver for the rest of the season so here’s hoping they end up in Indy!!!
Calikula - January 9, 2012
Yeap.... in division 0-3 at home
This is something to fix next season… My take is that we feared to lose too much on these 3 games. And so we ended losing.
Fabio Broncos - January 9, 2012
Home field advantage for Denver hasnt been good since 2005. It'll get better next year, Im sure
Calikula - January 9, 2012
Absolutely. Stadium was the loudest I've seen it in years

Eagles fan here
I’ve been to this blog before- and it’s always in peace. I have a lot of respect for this organization. I’ve been behind the Tebow thing since day 1, you have a great leader with a passion for the game and the ability and character to grow into a great player.
Over the last few seasons, Broncos have taken a few former Birds (Dawkins, Bunkley, Buckhalter). Seeing Dawkins in anything other then midnight green hurts- but atleast he’s with a respectable franchize.
I hope you guys win it all this year, Go Broncs- until the next time our teams meet
MeanGreen5 - January 9, 2012
Glad you guys kept Andy MG5, nice to see cooler heads prevail there.
The Eagles will be a force next year!
asinsoin - January 9, 2012
Thanks
We appreciate your players too, they have all contributed to our team
Sean in Pa. - January 9, 2012

respect the Iggles, Andy Reid and I share a religion, so I feel obligated :) In all seriousness, I loved Randall Cunningham, Jerome Brown and Reggie White when I was little. The Jerome Brown A Football Life documentary was epic!

If we compare the former Eagles with the former Pats landed in Denver...
Oh God! lol
Thank you for your thoughts and support. I like your franchise as well… until the next time we meet =)
Fabio Broncos - January 9, 2012
I hate to bother you
But If you have any other HOF players you want to send our way. Let them know they are more than welcome :)
Dawkins has been a beast. I hope he is able to recover fully, even if he doesn’t ever play another game.

Well-written and a great finish that gave me goosebumps.
uziguzi - January 9, 2012
there's always someone trying to douse my flame
my coworker comes up to me and says, Brad, your Broncos are so charitable in how they almost gave the game away, way to take things out of context, we won the game, that’s all that matters and the Steelers benefited from some calls (the lateral for instance) that they shouldn’t have. Well, let’s smack the Cheatriots around!
the new Bradfather - January 9, 2012
I have plenty of those
around too. Some of my very best friends are steelers fans… We all watched the game together, and I wish I had them on camera on the overtime play..the looks on their faces was priceless!
tjpmontana - January 9, 2012
My coworkers are
now Patriots fans and if we win Saturday, they’ll be Texans or Ravens fans, probably Packers or Saints fans after that, we’re winning, I’ll take it nah-nah!
the new Bradfather - January 9, 2012
I broached the subject with my wife yesterday
The Broncos win and Ravens win, I am sixty miles from a Bronco playoff game. She said…… “ticket*s*?” I said… “I’ll go alone!”
Totally floored but I think if the Broncos play in Baltimore that I will be there!!!!!
Sean in Pa. - January 10, 2012
I want to celbrate but im kinda worried about our WR corps
We have 2 wide outs that can play… And don’t tell me Willis is a legit receiver. He had 2 dropped passes in the endzone as well as a holding call in the endzone and drops a ton. We need to get Eron Back. Anyone else think we could use a Riley, Randy Moss type?
valas40 - January 9, 2012
Matt Willis
has to step his game up, let Eron Riley try, I’m cool with that, that Broncos-Cards game left a propitious impression for sure!
the new Bradfather - January 9, 2012
I happen to like Willis. He's has had some really good games too though.
I think if he has the role as #3 receiver he will do fine. He has been a standout on STs. I think he’s a playmaker and given the chance won’t let us down. That holding penalty was a tough call, it was a screen and he just got upfield into his block too early.
rubincarterrocks - January 9, 2012
and seriously Rubin
how often do they call that?
the new Bradfather - January 9, 2012
maybe 1 out of 10 plays?
elliottw - January 9, 2012
that sucks
we were the dime from the dollar bill that time :(
the new Bradfather - January 9, 2012
yeah, it was a weak call. like the other posters it sure seemed like
a poorly officiated game overall. Don’t know how much I can read into a guys demeanor on TV but the head ref always seemed a bit confused or hesitant in his descriptions after each penalty….must have been a bad “bio-metrics” day for the whole officiating team, maybe their biological clocks are all synchronized at this point…
rubincarterrocks - January 9, 2012
For this week we are going to need TE routes
and use an FB/RB to block
yibberat - January 9, 2012
Rubin what are you smokin'
you said he needs a chance? Tebow targeted him twice and it was broken up in which he barely tried to attacked the ball and the other he dropped when it hit his numbers
valas40 - January 9, 2012
Divine Intervention?
not a believer, but did anyone who was at the game see the giant ring of white smoke drift over the stadium during the second quarter? i think it happened after royal’s touchdown, so i assume that it had something to do with the scoreboard pyrotechnics, but the guy behind me remarked that there was a halo over the broncos for the day. hard to argue with that…
drfractal - January 9, 2012
I am Christian myself
and according to my beliefs, the Lord helps those who help themselves. The Broncos made lots of good plays to keep themselves afloat and when the Steelers had a chance to win in regulation, Rob Ayers, Von and Doom all stepped up!
the new Bradfather - January 9, 2012
Actually Bradfather there is nothing in the Bible that teaches that principle but I do believe
solid Christian principles applied and adhered to in our lives consistently helps us navigate difficult times more successfully. For eg: we are taught that perseverance is a good characteristic to exhibit in our lives, this allows us to hang tough and keep moving forward with hope in challenging times, it’s easy how that can be applied to a guys play in a football game (not to mention in many areas of life).
rubincarterrocks - January 9, 2012
you're right, there is nothing in the Bible about it
but we Mormons find that in our Book of Mormon, of course that’s neither here nor there, we’re agreed! We’re also agreed on this : GO BRONCOS!!!

the new Bradfather - January 9, 2012
If God had any vested interest in the Denver Broncos
Don’t you think he’d give you a much more sparkling and decisive record, like 16-0 going into the playoffs? An 8-8 finish reliant on an Oakland Raiders’ meltdown isn’t quite the recipe to instill faith in nonbelievers!
Adam Fox - January 9, 2012
I do not believe
God takes special interest in the Broncos but even if He did, it is often His way to have believers work out their own problems and He will intervene if He sees fit, it may sound like a copout, but GO BRONCOS!!!

Great post.
I’ve always been Proud to be a Broncos fan. I do have to say the last few years have been hard. I’ve name my NFL Fantasy Playoff Challenge team the ill- Tempered Mutant Broncos and started Tebow, McGahee, DT, Prater and our defense. Not doing to bad.
Kronis - January 9, 2012
The Next Step for Tebow?
Great post, Sayre. You gotta believe — but the Broncos also have to play without turning the ball over. McGahee’s fumble could have really turned out badly . . .
But my point here is the following: When will Tebow have the green light to start audiblizing to the kind of play that won the game? On all those first down plays, it was clear that Polamalu was cheating into the line, and was in the backfield on running plays. We’re talking about a safety here. No reason he shouldn’t be switching those first down running plays to some gimme pass routes—like letting the TE slip through the line and cut across the field behind the linebackers. With a play fake, this will succeed 9 out of 10 times. If we are going to beat the Patriots, Tebow has to have the “license” to do this. He’s earned it, and now let’s see what happens when we truly use the run to set up the pass, and the play is changed at the line, just like Rodgers, or Brady, or any other of those qb’s that hit those passes. What do you think?
showtime01 - January 9, 2012
showtime01 really points out why TT is such an asset for the team. In the past few years
when something bad would happen in the middle of a game (like McGahee’s fumble) the team would become demoralized and crumble, losing whatever mojo it had going at the time. However with guys like TT in leadership on the field you can see the team does not lose heart like they used to. It does show that one guy can make a difference in the overall psyche of a team….
rubincarterrocks - January 9, 2012
Well Said Rubin!
the new Bradfather - January 9, 2012
Our offense will be so much more efficient once Tebow gets to call his own audibles.
Unfortunately, they may have to give him an offseason for that to happen. It no doubt holds us back.

I know a lot of people are talking trash about that last play
And how it was DT that did all the work.
But if it wasn’t for Tebow, the Running game, Oline and play calling, the steelers wouldn’t have committed all in for a run. Without that DT catches the ball but doesn’t score on that play.

Exactly, I've been hammering on our coaches lately for what I
thought was poor adjustments mid-game and some week game plans but they outcoached the Steelers this week, perfect call at the perfect time in OT. Must give them their props! For our option offense to work they must let TT throw more. The running did begin to loosen up the more he threw on Sunday and visa-versa.
rubincarterrocks - January 9, 2012
Von Miller will be on Jim Rome in a minute if anyone wants to tune their radios into that!
He also just talked to John Lynch about the Broncos, and the other playoff games. Lynch was interesting, he also thought that the Broncos outcoach the Steelers yesterday; said Steelers didn’t adjust as well. And to be fair also said Steelers were obviously hurt by injuries on defense too. But didn’t adjust well. Also said (and Rome, too) that Elway and Broncos don’t need to commit to Tebow for ten years (no one gets that kind of commitment) but will likely commit to him for next season and work to give Tebow more around him, and work to develop in off season.
