In continuation of the Denver Broncos Free Agents, we come to Defensive End Derrick Harvey. Derrick was an early entrant for the 2008 NFL Draft after an All-American Junior year at Florida. He had a fast 40-Time (4.84) and fooled many who took the bait and rode the hype. He was selected by Jacksonville in the first round (8th overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft.

Derrick joined the Broncos as a free agent on Aug. 1, 2011 as a 4th-year Defensive End who saw action in five games his first season with the Broncos and had four tackles (two solo).
2011 Season Highlights:
The Broncos spent $600,000 on the failed experiment known as Derrick Harvey in 2011. If they bring him back, he will make a minimum $700,000 in 2012. Considering his price tag was over $100,000 per game for a one Tackle average per, Harvey's supply doesn't meet the demand and I can't envision the Broncos would be interested in another year of sunk costs or literal "dead money." Perhaps he is playing out of position and would be nore productive as a 3-4 Outside Linebacker.

Is there no poll because it is unanimous that we should get rid of him? :)
BroncoMath101 - February 14, 2012
lol. I was wondering the same thing.
If anything, we could keep him for camp fodder – you never know what might happen.
Tim Lynch - February 14, 2012
No, I merely forgot to put it in.
Sorry, I will fix it.
KaptainKirk - February 14, 2012
Harvey needs to be released
Broncos have already had his twin Jarvis Moss lets hope they don’t let Harvey hang around as long .
ultraclassic04 - February 14, 2012
Yes Jason Taylor has caused a few teams to fail by
targeting athletes they think can become a Jason Taylor. 4.84 is not all that fast in the 40 though.
Keyworthpunch - February 14, 2012
no, but I think the 40 is really overrated
there was a Virginia Tech wideout named Bryan Still who ran a 4.1 40 but was a bust, chances are you never heard of him. Of course, the Chargers, being the suckers they are, brought him in and he choked. The only incredibly swift wideouts that ever really did anything in the NFL of substance are Willie Gault and Joey Galloway
the new Bradfather - February 14, 2012
What about Bob Hayes and Randy Moss?
9798 - February 14, 2012
I stand corrected
the new Bradfather - February 14, 2012
I just remember
observing Hayes play because I grew up in Virginia, watching the Redskins with my Dad. Plus I remember Moss once saying that there wasn’t a corner in the league that could catch him after he turned on his afterburners. :-)
9798 - February 14, 2012
it's true
of course Randy Moss’ online television show was a really bad idea, someone needs to tell him not to replicate such behavior
the new Bradfather - February 14, 2012
I'm neither a fan of Randy Moss, nor of bad behavior...
nor of boasting, nor of taking plays off, neither. Moss (like TO, IMO) will find out that his past theatrics did not really endear him greatly to others. Sure, there will always be those that gravitate towards this type of character, but there’s a reason why it’s said that you’re known by the company you keep, and if it looks like a duck…well…etc. ;-)
9798 - February 15, 2012
I agree Brad but I think you have a better chance gambling on a fast 40 time than a slow one.
BroncoMath101 - February 14, 2012
for sure
and we have to have combine stars and workout warriors if you will, just like Mike Mamula!
the new Bradfather - February 14, 2012
who actually was not a terrible player
he was a starter caliber player for many years in the NFL…
… he just never lived up to the draft hype
cjfarls - February 14, 2012
Not even for a 6-5, 270 DE?
I mean, next to your linemen, they’re probably the next biggest guys on a football team, right? Generally, your TE’s and LB’ers aren’t quite as tall or heavy, so I’m thinking that a 4.84 second 40 is probably moving pretty good for a big guy like that.
9798 - February 14, 2012
thanks kirk. sad: i vaguely thought he was on IR all year. only 25 years old too. i’d like to see him broach his potential here but yeah, it’s probably cut bait time.
oxmouth - February 14, 2012
Agreed, if he had a glimmer of a chance he
would have at least “flashed” something by now. Some guys are great athletes, but, just not football players. You can succeed at the college level with that but it shows up big time in the pros. Cut him.
rubincarterrocks - February 14, 2012
I only think no on re-signing because I feel he may still feel he needs
to get paid 1st round money. If he’s OK with backup pay and thankful to have a chance I say let him fight it out in camp.
Basically I’m in the same boat with him as with all our FAs besides Prater and anyone over 30, if they sign reasonable contracts let them try out. Cutdowns will take care of who makes the roster. We don’t have to decide the roster until much later. If Prater doesn’t sign, franchise him. The guys over 30 are Hochstein, Haggan and Dawkins. Let them leave.
Digger24 - February 14, 2012
Problem is there is a minimum you have to pay him...
700k
Keyworthpunch - February 14, 2012
Yeah that a little to high IMO
EFX determines stuff like that for me. They evaluate with much more information than I have. The new minimum pay according to years in the league could put lots of guys out of work. They can’t play for less than the minimum?
Digger24 - February 14, 2012
thank goodness for EFX
they do all the heavy lifting while we speculate!
the new Bradfather - February 14, 2012
Hey, they do get paid more than us to do it.
Digger24 - February 14, 2012
of course, I assuredly agree with you :)
the new Bradfather - February 14, 2012
true, if Bowlen is reading this site
I hope he knows I’m available at, say…half John Elways price. Heck, I won’t even ask for a company car! I’ll be waiting by the phone Pat…
rubincarterrocks - February 14, 2012
who? This guy was on our team?
not for long I guess
Broncs55 - February 14, 2012
Jack Del Rio and GM Murta choked the pooch on him and their 2nd rd DE selection Glover that year...
Not sure how they are going to deal with him, but too me, he took up a roster spot for another player that could actually play.
bfree2bronc - February 14, 2012
add Jag's selection of Tyson Alualu and I have to worry about have to wonder
ability of our new DC to evaluate d-line talent. still want to draft DT im 1st?
si_ice - February 14, 2012 via mobile
Alualu is a decent player
overdrafted, but talented
cjfarls - February 14, 2012
Isnt it funny...
Who is Derrick Harvey?
Quite simply, he’s Jarvis Moss version 2.0! Another tall, but quick Florida DE who outperformed his skill in a high profile game that escalated his value to a point that could never be matched at the pro level. Only favorable is that we got Moss @ #17?, Harvey who was being pitched as being a much more talented Jarvis Moss is a BUST! By the way, the pick we traded to Dallas brought them Anthony Spence at #21 I believe? Funny, huh? Spencer might get the franchise tag from Dallas, and Harvey might get the “Boot” from Denver. lol
Hogblog - February 14, 2012
Anthony Spencer is who I wanted
and we had a shot at him, oh well, Romo’s his QB so the Cowgirls are never winning the Super Bowl anyway, sorry Anthony
the new Bradfather - February 14, 2012
As bad as Jarvis was/is I still would take him
over Harvey…he’s that bad.
rubincarterrocks - February 14, 2012
Your comment made me think
I wonder if he really is out of position. He might very well be suited to be an OLB. In this hybrid defense we run, he could line up with his hand on the ground or in a two point stance. I think he has the lateral movement to hold the edge and he could sure as hell slow down the new breed of really big TE coming across the middle. Hmmm…
firstfan - February 14, 2012
I wouldn't put him at OLB with a 4.8 40 time. Too slow to cover anyone. Maybe in a 3-4 as a rush LB but not in the 4-3. No way.
BroncoMath101 - February 14, 2012
really?
It’s not position, it’s talent? Don’t you think after 4 years his skills would’ve been discovered or coached up? We tried Jarvis Moss as an OLB, how’d that one work out…
Hogblog - February 14, 2012
not even HGH can make you better
if you have no talent to begin with, unless you’re Shawne Merriman
the new Bradfather - February 14, 2012
Ironically
Mincey’s a FA
