MHR Poll of the Week: The Broncos Off-Season Begins

Well I'm glad to say MHR Poll of the Week is back, and hopefully we can continue to do our best to keep the pulse on Bronco Country. Normally in this section we would review the previous week's poll, but since it's been a while, so we'll just take a look down memory lane and see how Mile High Report did in a few of it's predictions. Now I didn't include all the final data, just a few that stuck out in retrospect.

Star-divide

Pre-Season poll asking which off-season move was best:
- Willis McGahee signing 37% (!st)
- Re-signing Matt Prater 34%(2nd)
- Trading Gaffney for Jarmon 14% (3rd)

These make sense except for the Gaff trade, which actually went down as one of the biggest mistakes of the season

Pre-Season record predictions:

- Below 8-8 48%
- 8-8 16%
- Above 8-8 36%

Not bad MHR, not too bad.

Weakest link in the 2011 team:
- Defensive lineman 46% (1st)
- Special teams 14% (2nd)
- Defensive backs 2% (last)

Considering ST's and defensive lineman were two of the stronger squads this past season and defensive backs was the weakest, or among the weakest, squad this season.

If you had to hire any coach to coach a new team, who'd you choose:
- Bill Belicheck 27% (1st)
- Mike Tomlin 23% (2nd)
- Tom Coughlin (last)

If take into account we beat the 2nd highest voted coach in the playoffs and the 1st and last placed coaches went to the Super Bowl, and the last place coach won, guess it's true when people say Coughlin really doesn't get any respect.

Now the Poll:

Well with that little bit out of the way, let's get to the poll. Now in the off-season there are two key phases, free agency and the draft. Now each fans, coach and GM looks at these phases differently, using each phase to solve different problems on the team. So this is going to be a two-part question, today's question will ask what position do you want addressed in the draft, and keep in mind, next Wednesday we will ask what position you would want addressed in free agency. So if you want both a running back and defensive back, but you want a young running back in the draft and a veteran defensive back in free agency, you'll vote running back today and defensive back next week.

Good luck everyone.

Interesting poll Max...I voted for a DT first, but I think we will draft 4 or 5 of the positions listed...

Even though I haven’t changed my mind on NOT drafting a DT, that is a lesser need with the talent on board. Bunkley, M Thomas, Vickerson, Warren, McBean, Unrein, Jarmon and Sealver…I believe we will draft one for depth and development later in the draft. Drafting our first pick (position/player) will depend on who EFX sign in free agency. We have several holes to address and how they work them in March will give us clues for the first pick, or at least narrow it down…

C.J. Davis signing may have just filled our center position.

If this is the case I’d like to see a DT or if Miller is available a running back as our first pick.

Just let me know, dude

If we hadn’t signed this backup C/G… would you be thinking to select an OLineman on the 1st!?

Konz from Wisconsin has the potential to be a 10 year starter and possible AP at that but this pickup in all likelyhood negates that pick.

To answer your question, no, I would not be inclined to select an OL in the 1st. In fact, I might be more prone to trading back if there is a solid chance doing so might land us Lamar Miller. Scotty Payne’s video post on Miller has convinced me this is a guy we should target in the draft. Trading back would buy us some ammunition if EFX thinks we can pick Miller AND a DT with elite potential.

I'd like very much to select Miller.

I’d chose a RB in the 2nd, or maybe 3rd though. But my point is we must give Walton time to develop. OLinemen spend more years than the other positions to reach their full potential in NFL. For me he has a bright future ahead, besides we have some holes to fill instead of burning an early pick drafting a C this year.

Anyway, you gave me something new to think about…

Normally, I am a big fan of development or "coaching people" up but I'm concerned that Walton's physical upside is limited.
Matt Prater was a very important part of the team

obviously we have no choice, but to spend our first round pick on his replacement.

WHAT!!!????

Are you serious!!?? Spend a 1st rd pick on a kicker!!?? Only the Raiders would do that!!!

but it worked out for the Raiders, right?

sure Janikowski may not be any better than a couple of kickers who went undrafted, but he’s CARRIED them to the 78 wins they’ve had in the 12 years he’s been on the team.

Oh jack, what have you been smoking my friend?

Are you really using the Raiders and their joking adms year after year to support your idea of drafting a 1st round K??? Even Janikowski, I’m sure they could have selected him veeeery later that draft.

78 wins dude

it’s a pillar to aspire to. That’s like 6.5 wins a season on average.

Im sensing a heavy dose of sarcasm from our buddy right now
Just love this kind of recall...

On the new poll, I voted DB since It’s always too painful to watch Goodman being torched play after play, week in and week out.

But I’m ok with a 1st rounder DT pass rusher also.

Where's the all of the above button

Just kidding, but I would like to focus on both sides of the line and front 7 on defense and add a RB in the draft.

Since FA comes first, shouldn't the first poll be on FA? ;)

I said DL.

If we sign our current FA’s, we still need an impact penetrator on the interior D Line.

Agreed

Some of these holes may be filled before the draft arrives.

Agreed also

Hey Topher, we have a point here ;)

Haha that is true

But the draft has been a bigger talk recently and the FA post is only a week away. This was mostly a way to look where fans wanted vets to fill gaps versus where fans wanted youth.

Gotta go D-Line

I say re-sign Bunkley, maybe Franchise him.

Then draft a DT like Brandon Thompson from Clemson, really impressing me. Someone who can be a presence in the middle. I don’t think a DT can be really addressed in free agency.

However, I think a CB is also a big need right now and should be addressed in Rounds 1-3 of the draft, if not in FA as well.
