Defensive Lineman Ryan McBean is the next Denver Broncos Free Agent we will look at. McBean is going into his 5th year in the NFL and is a Restricted Free Agent who entered the league as a 4th round draft pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2007. Ryan was cut, re-signed to the Practice Squad, activated for one game and cut again by the Steelers. He joined the Broncos in September of 2008 and spent that season on the Practice Squad after competing in Pittsburgh’s training camp to begin the year. McBean started all 14 games he played for the Broncos in 2009 and registered a career-high 25 Tackles as a Defensive End. In 2010, Ryan struggled a bit with the position change to Defensive Tackle. He appeared in all 16 games (4 starts) and made 18 Tackles while recovering one Fumble
Ryan McBean has played 47 games with 21 starts for Denver the last two seasons while totaling 76 tackles during that span. In 2011, McBean made great strides. He registered his first four career Sacks and had 5 Quarterback Hits, both which ranked 4th on the Broncos. He also made 8 Tackles for a Loss (3rd on the team) to go with his career high 33 Tackles. Ryan added 5 Tackles and 1 Tackle For Loss in the Divisional Playoff vs. New England. Not bad for a guy who only played 2 years of College ball.
McBean is very athletic, quick and strong lineman who is fast enough to play at the Defensive End position but just big enough to also succeed in the middle. A solid athlete and a motivated presence on the line. He could improve on his explosiveness off the line. His pass-rushing skills have improved, but he does play tentatively at times and could use a few more moves and wrap up better when tackling.
Free Agent Options
Ryan made $480,000 in 2011. In 2012, he qualifies for a minimum $700,000 salary. As a Restricted Free Agent, the Broncos have first right of refusal should another team make an offer to McBean. Of course, Denver could place a Tag on him, though it is unlikely. For the sake of thoroughness, the Projected Franchise Tender for a Defensive Tackle in 2012 is between $7.89 - $8.193 Million. The Projected Transition Tender is $6.613 - $6.867 Million. Other Free Agents available, include Jeremy Mincey, Aubrayo Franklin, Kelly Gregg, Paul Soliai, Sione Pouha and Antonio Garay among others.
As an RFA, nothing guarantees that Ryan McBean will re-sign with the Broncos, but I believe it would be beneficial for them to do so. What are your thoughts?
Dlineman like Olineman take time to develop into their full NFL potential.
McBean may have hit his ceiling last year, but he definitely someone that we should bring back. With elite edge rushers, we need DT who can also get to the QB. McBean and Ayers are two guys who showed that they can do that – just not on a regular basis. The fact that they both showed improved pass rushing ability last year relative to 2010, means that McBean needs to be brought back, particularly if he comes back at the league minimum or slightly above league minimum.
he is a big body and if you have several useful d-linemen who you can rotate every so often, you will give opposing offenses a heck of a nightmare. With that said, everyone knows we need to improve the D-line via the draft or if anything good emerges in free agency
A lot of the FA's we have this year I have no problem bringing back as at least camp fodder
bring him in for training camp and if he makes it great, if not means we found someone better. He did improve last year and although he still suffered from those mental errors at times, he at least showed growth and improvement.
Always seemed to happen on third down, resulting in opponents first down. Either jumping offsides, facemask penalty…something. Maybe I’m wrong, but I remember hearing his number called way too often.
Encroachment, 5 yards in Week 7
Encroachment, 5 yards in Week 11
Face Mask, 15 Yards in Week 15
Wild Card Game
Neutral Zone Infraction, 5 yards
Encroachment, 5 yards
Also, according to Football Outsiders, an “original round” tender for McBean would cost the Broncos $1.26 million in non-guaranteed base salary in 2012.
The poll was hilarious considering not much more than a year ago everybody was wanted him cut!
Funny how people try to out guess themselves. McBean is finally getting it? Maybe. Maybe he fits Fox’s scheme/system better than the other coaches he played for…Re-sign McBean and the other two and draft a pass rushing DT…Unrein can go back to the PS or go bye-bye.
I actually have always felt McBean has been a positive on the D line
for us and a good contributor. When he was in it seems like he was making plays and a number of times he was making plays at critical junctures. His playing time has been increasing which tells me the coaches are seeing progression in him. I’d definitely keep him. Agree that he is a valuable rotation player (also M.Thomas)
I thought he really played good this year. We need to keep him. Original round tender.
Warren will be gone. We really don’t know what will happen with Thomas and Bunk. Unrein and Siliga most likely aren’t the answer. Plus we could get a forth rounder if some 3-4 team really wants him.
Ryan did a serviceable job
I just hope he doesn’t look through ladies’ windows anymore, that’s kind of creepy

how does a 300 pound man stalk anything other than a cheeseburger, unless it's a quarterback?
I mean, come on. That tree branch is bound to break!
Broncs55 - February 15, 2012
he would also stalk
the Quizno’s Philly beef sub because those are scrumptious
the new Bradfather - February 15, 2012
agreed on the scrumptiousness of the Quizno's Philly Beef Sub
Who wouldn’t stalk that?!?
Broncs55 - February 15, 2012
McBean really progressed this year!
I say keep him. Good rotational player.
Broncs55 - February 15, 2012
YES
He was a pleasant surprise imo. Not an elite DLineman, but a good rotational one.

McBean is a restricted free agent.
He will be kept because he will be cheap if we tag him.
Digger24 - February 15, 2012
restricted free agency
has an uncanny knack for keeping potential suitors away :)
the new Bradfather - February 15, 2012
I heard Pitt
might use the 1st round tag on Wallace. Now he would be one to give up a late 1st round pick for.
Digger24 - February 15, 2012
there are always exceptions to the rule
the new Bradfather - February 15, 2012
To franchise tag him would be foolish and not cost effective, when matching another teams offer would be smaller...
Nobody is going to offer him 7+MIL a year and the Broncos can re-sign him at a fraction of that…
bfree2bronc - February 15, 2012
What???
Digger24 - February 15, 2012
Not franchise tag Bill
the RFA tender contract for what round they were drafted in. Not sure if he even was drafted. He came over from the Steelers I think.

Seems like he killed us on penalties last season

dougincarlislepa - February 15, 2012
that was the previous year
this year he was actually a positive contributer.
Broncs55 - February 15, 2012
McBean had 5 penalties called on him in 2011
Encroachment, 5 yards in Week 7

Keep him.
Want the all time record of the number of Ryan’s on one team.

Yeah, I wanted his head a year ago.
Mind you, he is not great, but serviceable depth.
si_ice - February 15, 2012
keep him
….but again he’ll be a bubble player when it comes to final cuts in August.
He’s serviceable and worth keeping around for now, but also replaceable.
