Prior to the combine I have looked at what we have, what we need and what I think are the best options.
I think there are a number of FA from outside the Broncos camp that we should try and add, in addition to CJ Davis and Jason Hill, but not too many.

These are:
QB - Josh Johnson (younger and more upside than my second choice Dennis Dixon). You'll see I'm also picking a QB in the draft
MLB - Dan Connor. I think Irving will fight for the starting job, but that may be a year away.
CB - Brandon Carr. I would have Goodman leave and have Squid compete for the starting role.
That's all!
My draft choices will raise some controversy, but we need an outlet for Tim Tebow and I don't think Fells is the guy at TE and although I have great hopes for Thomas and Green, Id like to see real competition for this role, which I hope will be greatly utilized.
We also need another quality RB and DT and I have addressed these with my next picks as well as additional depth in the OL.
My draft choices are as follows:
25 Dwayne Allen TE 6'4" 255
57 Doug Martin RB 5'11" 224
88 Kheeston Randall DT 6'5" 305
120 Philip Blake C 6'2" 320
129 BJ Coleman QB 6'3" 234
152 Ryan Miller RG 6'8" 298
216 Matt Daniels S 6'0" 210
Which brings me to the 53 - those not included are just that!
OL - Clady/Harris, Beadles/CJ Davis, Walton/Blake, Kuper/Miller, Franklin/Clark
QB - Tebow, Johnson, Coleman
RB - McGahee, Martin, Moreno, Fannin
TE - Allen, Thomas, Green
WR - Thomas, Decker, Royal, Hill, Willis
FB - Larsen, Sylvester
DE - Ayers/Hunter, Dumervill/Harvey
DT - Bunkley, Thomas, Warren, Randall, Vickerson
SAM - Miller, Mohamed
MIKE - Connor, Irving
WILL - DJ, Woodyard
CD - Bailey/Harris, Carr/Thompson
Safeties - Moore, Carter, Bruton, Daniels
Kicker - Prater
Punter - Colquitt
Long Snapper - Paxon
Please advise if you think I have cut anyone who deserves to be in the 53.

Yeah I think everything is good except for the first pick
You have to look at it and ask were the TEs the problem or were the scheme, playcalling and Tebow not getting through his progressions the problem?
I think it was the latter which is why I don’t think drafting a TE early will help much. Besides, how many 1st round TEs besides Gronk have really had an impact their rookie year? Not many that I know recently.

I agree BM101
We just drafted two TEs last season, it would be wise to see what we got before going back to the well there.
CH74 - February 22, 2012
Agreed BM
And Gronk wasn’t even a first. He was taken in the 2nd round

You hit this one on the head
It is not that our TE’s did not do much. They were asked to block. Even on plays most teams use them as HOT routes on blitzes our were blocking. Fells caught the ball quite well when thrown to and it is way to early to give up on the other young guys. Scheme has to be changed or we will not make much progress.

A couple thoughts
TE is a wasted pick in the first. We need to go DT with that first pick and get a guy that can contribute early. A late round guy doesn’t cut it there. The rest of your draft looks pretty good though. I doubt we’ll pick a Center and a Guard. It is a waste of a roster spot to carry more than 7-8 OL on the active roster. I’d look for mid round LB picks that can be plugged right in on STs.
Dan Connor is probably not the answer at Mike. Connor has been a little over rated by peeps around here that have been blinded by the inadequacies of Mays. I think Irving starts this season after getting an actual off season. I think Safety is a position that should be addressed in FA unless they can plug Harris in back there and use Squid and Vaughn as the Nickel and Dime.

I agree with everything except Dan Connor.
I think Dan Connor could be a starter on another team. He has been stuck behind Jon Beason for his entire career and hasn’t really seen a lot of playing time until this year when Beason went down. I’m not saying he’ll start ahead of Irving but I think he is the perfect mid tier guy who can compete with Irving and possibly start. I also think hands down he is a better option than Mays He fits Fox’s LB mold better and he is faster 4.6 compared to 4.8 so will probably be better in coverage.

The only way we get Connor
Is if he comes cheaper than Mays. Connor is not going to come out to Denver unless he is the starter. It sounds like the powers that be are pretty high on Irving, so that is an iffy proposition. I do think we need veteran insurance, but I don’t think it will be Connor.

why no love for Michael Egnew?

I like most of it, but puzzled by the 6'8 under 300lb Guard.
My ideal Guard is 6’3 – 6’4 310lb with a quick burst step, great hands and strength.
I don’t see us drafting a TE in the first, especially when we have 2 talented developmental players and the promising Ingram. I think we will keep one of Fells or Rosario as a veteran presence until the younsters develop. Fox mentioned DLine and CB as priorities going into the free agency and the draft, with interior OLine, QB and RB positions.

Miller has a ton of value in the late 5th round
But Lucas Nix out of Pittsburgh could also be available and might be the better choice.
ElwayFanJ - February 22, 2012
Im sorry but I disagree 100% with the draft
Bleedorange - February 22, 2012
100% for me too.
Draft and FAs.
Digger24 - February 22, 2012
100%???
Doug Martin would be one hell of a pick up in the late 2nd round.
ElwayFanJ - February 22, 2012
:)
I am a Miller man.
Digger24 - February 22, 2012
I love your free agency plan and every draft pick except
Dwayne Allen
I’m not completely opposed to drafting a TE at #25 but personally I’d rather have Coby Fleener if we go that route.
